Two Welsh-born athletes will make Winter Olympics history in Milan-Cortina next month when they line up in the same discipline — monobo.
Adele Nicoll has travelled a long way from the person who was “sad” and “rather lost” in 2020, to the extent that the Welsh star now has a real chance of achieving the rare feat of competing in both a Summer and Winter Olympics. In that relatively short space of time, the multi-talented 27-year-old has twice been crowned British shot put champion in 2022 and 2023, and in a polar opposite to that discipline competed in the world bobsleigh championships this year.
Adele Nicoll has spoken of her pride and ambition for World Championship success and she and fellow Welsh star Kya Placide won Women’s Bobsleigh World Cup silver in Lake Placid, USA on Saturday. Nicoll and Placide finished runners-up just two months after they first slid together at the top level. In a remarkable performance, the pair clocked a combined time of 1 minute 54.2 seconds in the United States to beat a whole host of big names, including the reigning Olympic Champion and current Olympic bronze medalist.
Adelé Nicoll has set her sights on the 2026 Winter Olympics after a stunning ninth place finish in the monobob on her World Championship debut. The Welsh athlete clocked a combined time of 3 minutes 56.14 seconds, moving up from her overnight position of 10th in Winterberg, Germany.
On the day rugby superstar Louis Rees-Zammit jetted off to Florida in pursuit of his American football dream, two Welsh track and field athletes continued to take the world of bobsleigh by storm. Reigning British shot put champion Adele Nicoll and Welsh international sprinter Kya Placide teamed-up to win British Bobsleigh’s first Europa Cup gold medal for seven seasons with success in St Moritz on Friday morning. They took top spot for the first time in their bobsleigh careers less than 24 hours after Nicoll secured silver in the monobob event at the same venue.
Following the torrential rain that ended day one of the UK Athletics Championships, there was a flood of medals from Welsh athletes at the start of day two. The opening track action saw a Welsh one-two in the 5000m race walk thanks to Pembrokeshire Harrier Heather Warner and Cardiff’s Bethan Davies.
The prospect of a Welsh race-walking one-two-three at next month’s British Athletics Championships took a significant step forward on Saturday. Welsh Commonwealth Games athletes Heather Warner (formerly Lewis) and Bethan Davies have dominated British women’s race walking in recent years. Youngster Gracie Griffiths reinforced her growing reputation as the young pretender who is starting to snap on the heels of the established Great Britain internationals on day one of the Welsh Athletics Championships in Cardiff.
Sprinter Sam Gordon will be among the Welsh international athletes taking part in the Welsh Senior Athletics Championships this weekend at the Leckwith Stadium in Cardiff. Reigning Welsh 100m champion Gordon aims to defend his crown against Josh Brown and Joseph Berry with Great Britain star Jeremiah Azu away competing in Europe as he prepares for the European U23 Championships in Finland next month.
Adele Nicoll is already an international athlete in two sports, but it would seem a reasonable bet to place on her one day making it a hat-trick. Adele said hello to bobsleigh after first emerging as a talented track and field athlete and she finds trying new sports just as satisfying as winning. The 25-year-old from Welshpool competed for Team Wales at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in shot put, where her recent rapid progress in the sport enabled her to finish eighth.
With just a month to go before the start of the Commonwealth Games, Adele Nicoll could not be in better form. Last weekend, the Birchfield Harrier produced the performance of her life to win the shot put title at the Muller UK Athletics Championships – just two weeks after claiming the Welsh title. Sitting in third place, Nicoll stepped into the circle at the Manchester Regional Arena for her fourth round effort.
